Information on the Industry: Merchant Maritime Sector

  1. Maritime Sector – Merchant ships are primarily used to carry cargo as trading vessels or carries passengers, basically the ships that are engaged in active commercial transportation.

1.1 Merchant vessels are the main tool of ocean transportation, carrying crude oil and goods throughout the world, in varied sizes of tankers, containers and bulk carriers.

he types of Merchant Vessels are divided into different categories according to their size and purpose such as:

1.1.1 Dry Cargo Ships used as Bulk carriers and Container ships. Tankers used for transporting crude oil, finished petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemicals and other liquids in bulk.

1.1.2 Specialized ships are designed to transport specific goods such as vehicles and machinery.  Offshore Vessels for transporting goods and personnel to offshore oil platform that operate deep in oceans.

  1. Maritime Sector – Commercial ships are primarily vessels varied by the different jobs they are required to do.
  2. The commercial ships’ categories are as below:
  • Tugs (Port Operations) – a vessel designed to push or pull other vessels to another location or maneuver them into position within Ports.

  • Patrol Security Vessel – a vessel designed for patrolling the coast in an enforcement of regulations activities, where these vessels are used in the harbour/port to enforce closures, enforce laws and keep unwanted vessels a safe distance from a location or a ship.

1.1 1. Floating Offshore Production Systems: Semi-submersibles and Drill ships are the main floating rigs hundreds of miles in deep waters are a type of permanent oil production systems.

1.1 Fishing High Seas vessels are the factory fishing fleets with different fishing methods of drift netting and bottom trawling fishing operations.
